  • Verify if System Restore is Running

Start with opening the Windows “Control Panel” by clicking on Windows “Start” menu followed by the same “Control Panel” link.

Open the Administrative Tools folder by double clicking on “Administrative Tools” option from the resulting control panel window. Also open the services tool by double clicking on the “Services” icon.

Now scroll down the services list and right click on “System Restore Service” then run it by hitting on the “Run” option.

  • Verify if System Restore is Enabled

Open the System Control Panel menu of options from the “Start” menu followed by right clicking on “My Computer” then “Properties”.

After this, Microsoft suggests you hit on the “System Restore” tab located above the system window.

You can then verify if the system drive has a status of “Monitoring” in the system restore window. You need to also clear the “Turn off System Restore on all Drives” check box if has been previously checked.

  • Verify Hard Drive Space

Open up your Disk Management tool by selecting “Start” followed by “Run” and type “diskmgmt.msc” into its resulting dialog then “Enter”.

You need to then verify that each of the drives that System Restore monitors has more than 200MB of free space from the “Free Space” column of the Disk Management window.

(System Restore requires at least 200MB of free space)

And if not, proceed with clearing up some disk space by clicking on “Start” followed by the “Control Panel” then double click on the “Add or Remove Programs” option.

Now uninstall unnecessary programs and applications from the list or head for your “Start” menu then “My Documents” and free up disk space by deleting personal files.

So once you have successfully completed these troubleshooting techniques with Windows XP support, your problem with the System Restore feature will be no more.
